For BMW N20 owners · 2012–2017

Is your N20 BMW a timing-chain or water-pump bill waiting to happen?

Enter your VIN. In seconds we confirm whether it has the N20 engine, show what its build year means for the timing chain, and list the NHTSA recalls for your model, including the free water-pump fix (24V-608). Then see the 8 parts that fail most often and what each one costs to fix early compared with fixing it after it fails.

Open safety recall 24V-608: the electric water pump's connector can let water in and short-circuit, which is a fire risk. It covers about 721k N20 BMWs. Dealers inspect it and, if needed, replace the pump free of charge. Recall details

This is documented, not forum folklore

We pulled every NHTSA owner complaint for N20 models from 2012 to 2015 and kept only the ones whose VIN decodes to an N20 engine.

Tap a numbered dot or a card. Every figure has a badge: SOURCED means it comes from a public source such as NHTSA data, BMW bulletins, retailer prices or shop quotes, and ESTIMATE means it's our estimate where no good public number exists.

What it costs: fix early vs. after failure

Estimated repair costs at an independent shop (parts and labor), using the midpoint of each range. The "if it fails" column is a reported failure range for repair bills, not a prediction for your car.

Estimated cost to fix early—independent shop, installed
Repair bills if every part fails—sum of midpoint repair costs, worst case
Ratio of failure bills to early-fix cost—not a probability-weighted saving

Essentials = timing chain, water pump + thermostat, expansion tank, oil filter housing gasket. The oil pan figure assumes the job is done while the subframe is already down for the chain. Dealer prices typically run 1.5–2× higher. ESTIMATE

What to bundle (and why it saves labor)

Most of an N20 repair bill is labor, so pair jobs that share the same teardown.

Subframe-down bundle

Timing chain + oil pan + mounts

  • Timing chain, guides, tensioner (revised parts)
  • Oil pan gasket (upper/lower)
  • Engine mounts (if original)
  • Oil filter housing gasket + belt while the front is open

Many shops drop or lower the subframe to reach the chain. Done on its own, the oil pan gasket needs that same teardown, so add it here for a few hundred dollars instead of paying for it later as a $1,500+ standalone job. SOURCED

Cooling bundle

Water pump + thermostat + tank

  • Check recall 24V-608 first: the pump may be replaced free
  • Electric water pump + thermostat
  • Expansion tank, cap, vent hose
  • Coolant flush and bleed

The coolant is drained either way, and the tank and hoses are cheap parts that age at the same rate. ESTIMATE

Ignition bundle

Plugs + coils

  • Spark plugs (OE spec)
  • 4 ignition coils if original past ~75k
  • Valve cover/PCV check while you're there

The coils come off to reach the plugs, so replacing old coils at the same time adds parts cost but almost no labor. ESTIMATE

Why trust this? Our method in 60 seconds

1 · Government data, filtered by VIN

We pulled NHTSA owner complaints for every N20 model name from 2012 to 2015 (2,088 raw). NHTSA groups some trims together, so we decoded each complaint's partial VIN and kept only real N20/N26 cars, which leaves 1,726. We left out 244 complaints that decoded to other engines and 118 with no usable VIN.

2 · Labeled sources

Failure ranges and prices come from BMW service bulletins posted on NHTSA, the Gelis v. BMW settlement, NHTSA recalls, live retailer prices (FCP Euro, ECS Tuning, BimmerWorld) and published shop quotes. Anything we couldn't source is labeled ESTIMATE.

3 · Honest about limits

These are reported ranges, not predictions. Complaints are self-reported, and the costs vary by region and shop. Nothing here guarantees a part won't fail, and none of it replaces an inspection by a qualified BMW technician.

Independence: we don't take money from shops for placement. Some parts links may be affiliate links (see the disclosure in the footer); they don't change the numbers.

N20 FAQ

Which BMWs have the N20 engine?

In the US, the N20 (and its low-emissions twin, the N26) is the 2.0L turbo four in the 2012–2016 328i, 2013–2016 320i, 2014–2016 228i and 428i, 2012–2016 528i, 2012–2015 X1 sDrive/xDrive28i, 2013–2017 X3 28i, 2015–2018 X4 28i, 2012–2016 Z4 sDrive28i, and the 2016–2018 X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid. Watch out: the 2012–2013 E90-generation 328i, the early 2012 X3 28i, and the 2016+ X1 28i use different engines. The VIN check above sorts this out for most cars.

How do I know if my timing chain is the old design?

BMW revised the N20 timing-chain parts in early 2015, and the class settlement covered engines built through February 2015. The VIN doesn't record the production month, so look at the label in the driver-side door jamb, which shows the month and year of manufacture (e.g. 11/14). If it's before 03/15, the car left the factory with the original design. Model year 2012–2014 cars are all original-design, 2016+ should have the revised parts, and 2015 can be either. A chain that has already been replaced (check the service records) changes the picture.

What does a failing N20 timing chain sound like?

Owners most often report a whine or whir from the front of the engine that rises with RPM, especially when cold. If you hear it, have a BMW-experienced shop check chain stretch and guide wear before driving hard. This page can't diagnose your car.

Is recall 24V-608 (water pump) free?

Yes. Safety recall repairs are free at BMW dealers. Under 24V-608, dealers inspect the electric water pump's connector and replace the pump or connector if needed, and fit a protective shield. Confirm whether your specific VIN has the recall open at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a dealer.

Does the Gelis v. BMW timing-chain settlement still cover me?

Probably not. The settlement covered 2012–2015 N20 vehicles, with coverage generally up to 8 years / 100,000 miles from the in-service date. By 2026 nearly every class vehicle is past 8 years. If you paid for a chain repair inside the coverage window and never claimed, or you're unsure, ask a BMW dealer to check your VIN.

How accurate are these repair costs?

They're estimated repair costs at independent shops, taken from published shop quotes, retailer part prices and owner reports. Every figure is labeled SOURCED or ESTIMATE. Dealers often charge 1.5–2× more, and prices vary by region. Get a written quote before any work.

Will doing this work keep my engine from failing?

No one can promise that. Replacing known weak parts early can lower your exposure to some expensive failures, but parts can still fail, and other things can go wrong. The "if it fails" numbers are reported failure ranges for repair bills, not predictions.

What's in the $19 N20 Used-Car / Ownership Report?

A personalized PDF built from your VIN and mileage. It includes a build-date chain assessment, a recall checklist for the dealer, a mileage-based plan with estimated costs and part numbers, a pre-purchase inspection script and fair price ranges. It's a preorder: you'll get it by email at launch, or a full refund if we don't deliver.

Do you store my VIN?

No. The VIN check runs in your browser and sends the VIN only to NHTSA's public vPIC decoder and recall API. We only receive what you choose to send us, such as your email if you sign up. See the privacy policy.

Important: RepairAhead provides general information for N20-engine BMW owners. Failure mileages are a reported failure range drawn from public complaints, bulletins and shop reports, and costs are an estimated repair cost. Neither is a prediction for your car. Replacing parts early can lower your exposure to some failures, but it does not guarantee that any part won't fail. This page is not a mechanic's diagnosis. Before you buy parts or authorize repairs, have your car inspected by a qualified BMW technician or shop.
